Tips for supporting parents in hospital

  1. Help patients with connect with their children.

  2. Inform patients if the Wi-Fi is good enough for video calls

  3. Suggest that they record chapters of their children’s books and remind them to send selfies a day

  4. Remind them to prepare their child for a visit - what will they see, hear, smell

  5. Make a child feel welcomed during a visit. Turn a room into a family room.

  6. Make an art wall to display artwork created by patient’s children. Especially for those who can’t visit.

  7. Write a note to the child. Or allow the patient to take a video of you waving and saying your name.

  8. Ask patients to bring in their kid’s favourite toy. Help them take photos around the clinic.

  9. If appropriate invite the kids in to see where their parent goes and to ask questions.

  10. Have age-appropriate cancer education resources on site.
