All behaviour is communication. So when there is a melt down, we should think what could be causing this?

Why?

All children, no matter what their age, can have difficulty articulating how they are feeling. So watching their behaviour can give us clues into what is going on for them internally. If we can understand why they may have run away, kicked a hole in the wall, started lying, using baby talk etc, we have more compassion for them, and we can help them by acknowledging and validating the feelings behind these behaviours

It is normal for children’s behaviours to change when family life changes due to your cancer diagnosis. Sometimes it is hard to work out whether the changes are due to normal child development or because of your illness. If you’re not sure, ask other parents with similar aged children, and/or contact Maggie’s who can provide free psychological support at their centres or online.

Watch the workshop below, or look at the resources, or read through some 3 am worries that are very commonly seen in children when their parent is sick.
